28. 30. And to every beast <02416> of the earth <0776>, and to every fowl <05775> of the air <08064>, and to every animal that creepeth <07430><08802> upon the earth <0776>, in which [is] life <02416> <05315>, [I have given] every green <03418> herb <06212> for food <0402>: and it was so. {life: Heb. a living soul}

31. And God <0430> saw <07200><08799> every thing that <0834> he had made <06213><08804>, and, behold, [it was] very <03966> good <02896>. And the evening <06153> and the morning <01242> were the sixth <08345> day <03117>.

In the King James Bible, these 333 Ancient Hebrew words of Genesis 1 are translated into sentences which involve 883 English words.

An Interesting Exercise!

Here are two Challenges for you! We provide you with just the Original Ancient Hebrew words (transliterated into English), of well-known Bible Verses, and their possible translations into English. You are then challenged to compose your own translation, which you can then check with any Version of Bible to see if your translation matches theirs!

The first is rather simple, the second a little harder. They will give you a brief example of the difficulties of Translating the Bible into English!

First Challenge

A Familiar Bible Verse. Identify the Verse!

The first challenge Verse is actually a single Ancient Hebrew word:

ratsach<07523> <08799>

How do you translate it? In the King James Bible, that single Ancient Hebrew word is translated into four words, but actually the translation is somewhat incorrect!

Second Challenge

A Familiar Bible Verse. Identify the Verse!

The second challenge Verse includes a series of 19 Ancient Hebrew words. You will need a sheet of paper to work out your translation!

min<04480> 'adamah<0127> tsamach<06779> Y@hovah<03068> 'elohiym<0430> tsamach<06779><08686> `ets<06086> chamad<02530><08737> mar'eh<04758> towb<02896> ma'akal<03978> `ets<06086> chay<02416> tavek<08432> gan<01588> `ets<06086> da`ath<01847> towb<02896> ra`<07451>

In the King James Bible, these 19 Ancient Hebrew words are translated into sentences which involve 43 English words.

Since you are likely familiar with the text of the Bible, this will eventually come to seem familiar and you will figure out which Verse it is! But a Translator would not have had that pre-knowledge of what the "right answer" is! We considered giving you a more obscure Verse to try to translate because of this factor, but we think you will get the point of this exercise anyway.

Why Do Different Bibles Seem to Sometimes Disagree?

There is yet another lesson available in this subject! We have the ability to understand why different English Bible translations do not always seem to agree with each other. We will use one specific Verse in the Old Testament, Proverbs 24:26.

In the NIV Bible, this is presented as:

26 An honest answer is like a kiss on the lips.

But in the KJAV Bible, it is instead:

26 [Every man] shall kiss [his] lips that giveth a right answer.

In the first, it is presented as a comparison, but in the second it is presented as a response (action). Quite different!

We can examine the (five) actual Ancient Hebrew words:

[Every man] shall kiss<05401><08799> [his] lips<08193> that giveth<07725><08688> a right<05228> answer<01697>.

This examination seems to suggest that the King James Bible might be more precisely accurate regarding this specific Verse. The fact that the Qal stem applies, the reference to kiss seems to be an action.

But part of the point here is for you to see that the job of translating even a single Verse is harder than it might first have seemed!
