Screen Choices

Various manufacturers offer up to four possible arrangements regarding the mesh screens that are usually behind the glass doors. The logic behind the presence of mesh screens is for the event where a fire would be built with the glass doors opened, and the fire being of a wood species that "pops" a lot. In the event that a small burning piece of wood would pop out toward the room, the mesh would keep it from ever getting to the carpeting or a child. However, such screens have become such "standard" expected features of glass firescreens that most include that provision even when the user might use gas logs or otherwise not actually need it!

The four possibilities are: (they are not always all offered on any specific door model or by a specific manufacturer).

Hanging Screens. This is by far the most common, and is the most likely screens on "stock" RECTANGULAR door models. The concept is relatively like sliding shower curtains, and the Hanging Screens are moved by hand, just like shower curtains. These screens are flexible, and hang loosely, again, just like ???!
On arch-top door sets, this choice is NEVER available! Any vibration would let the two screens to slide down hill and to open unintentionally. In addition, the taller screen necessary near the middle would hit the floor when it got near the side!
Rod Mesh Doors. These are not precisely "doors" but they DO open in the manner that twin / cabinet doors do. A swinging "arm" or rod is mounted near the top of the opening, where it could swing out toward the room after the glass doors are opened. The mesh screen is solidly attached to this rod, so it swings out with the rod. These screens are also flexible, hanging loosely, with NO frame around them. This style works for either rectangular or arch-top doorsets.
Gate Mesh Doors. These are almost always an extra-cost option. These actually are full screen doors, complete with black metal frames around each screen. They snap closed, as twin / cabinet doors, a couple inches inward of where the glass doors are. If you look VERY closely at certain of the door photos in our collection, even on "clearview" style doorsets, there seems to be a narrow black line down the middle of the glass area. In real life, that is virtually unnoticeable, but in the photos, when you look carefully, you can see this as the two innermost edges of the (narrow) black Gate Mesh door frames, in their closed position. (The frames are generally MUCH narrower than shown in this drawing!)
No Screens. The vast majority of STOCK doorsets include one of the above choices as a standard feature. Many of the CUSTOM doorsets do not include any screens as standard, and there is a price differential for any of them. Check the "Options Chart" on our page describing the particular model you are interested in. However, on the CUSTOM door models that DO include some sort of screens as standard, there is often a very slight price reduction if the screens are not desired.
