The councils of Constantinople were four ecumenical Councils of the Christian church, held between the 4th and the 9th centuries. The gathering in Constantinople of 150 Eastern bishops at the request of the Emperor Theodosius I was later regarded by the Council of Chalcedon (451) as the second great ecumenical council of the church. In the year 380 the emperors Gratian and Theodosius I decided to convoke this council to counter the Arians, and also to judge the case of Maximus the Cynic, bishop of Constantinople. The holy fathers, who have gathered at intervals in the four holy councils, have followed the examples of antiquity.
