The First Vatican Council, the 20th ecumenical council of the Roman Catholic church, is best known for its decree affirming the doctrine of papal Infallibility. The First Vatican Council, convened by Pope Pius IX in Rome, is reckoned by Roman Catholics to be the twentieth ecumenical church council. INTRODUCTION

This council was summoned by Pope Pius IX by the bull Aeterni Patris of 29 June 1868. Ce conseil a été convoqué par Pope Pius IX par le taureau Aeterni Patris du 29 Juin 1868. The purpose of the council was, besides the condemnation of contemporary errors, to define the catholic doctrine concerning the church of Christ.
