The Articles of
Religion is a term commonly used for the standards of doctrine of the United
Methodist Church. Les articles de la religion est une expression

unie. The Articles stem
from the abridgment of the Thirty-nine Articles of the Church of England
prepared by John Wesley for use in the American Methodist Episcopal Church
organized in 1784; Wesley reduced the Thirty-nine Articles to
twenty-four. Les articles proviennent de la version abrégée du
Trente-neuf articles de l'Église d'Angleterre établi par John Wesley à l'usage

twenty-fifth article (Article 23) outlining the church's relationships with the

The Articles of
Religion as adopted by the 1784 Christmas Conference have remained intact
throughout the history of the Methodist Episcopal Church and its successor

There is but one living and true God,
the maker and preserver of all things. Il existe mais seul Dieu vivant et

are three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Et dans

God was himself in Jesus Christ to
reconcile man to God. Dieu est lui-même en Jésus-Christ pour réconcilier

Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, He joined together the deity of God and
the humanity of man. Conçu du Saint-Esprit, est né de la Vierge Marie, il
rejoint ainsi la divinité de Dieu et l'humanité de l'homme. Jesus of Nazareth was God in human
flesh, truly God and truly man. Jésus de Nazareth était Dieu dans notre
chair, vrai Dieu et vrai homme. He came to save us. Il est venu
pour nous sauver. For us the Son of God suffered, was
crucified, dead and buried. Pour nous, le Fils de Dieu a souffert, a été
crucifié, mort et enterré. He poured out His life as a blameless

His Resurrection

Jesus Christ is risen victorious from

body became more glorious, not hindered by ordinary human limitations.
Son corps ressuscité est devenu plus glorieux, et non pas entravée par les
limitations de l'homme ordinaire. Thus He ascended into heaven. Il
a donc monté au ciel. There He sits as our exalted Lord at
the right hand of God the Father, where He intercedes for us until all His

He will return to judge all men.

The Holy Spirit is the third person of

the Father and the Son, He is one with them, the eternal Godhead; equal in
deity, majesty, and power. Partant du Père et du Fils, Il est l'un avec

He is God effective in Creation, in

The Holy Spirit is the administrator of
the salvation planned by the Father and provided by the Son's death,

The Holy Spirit is poured out upon the

real the lordship of Jesus Christ in the believer so that both His gifts of

In relation to the world He is the

The Bible is
God's written Word, uniquely inspired by the Holy Spirit. La Bible est

la Parole vivante. As attested by the early church and
subsequent councils, it is the trustworthy record of God's revelation,

totalement véridique dans tout ce qu'elle affirme. It has been faithfully preserved and

The Scriptures
have come to us through human authors who wrote, as God moved them, in the
languages and literary forms of their times. Les Écritures nous sont

the Holy Spirit, to speak through this Word to each generation and

The Bible has
authority over all human life. La Bible a autorité sur l'ensemble de la
vie humaine. It teaches the
truth about God, His creation, His people, His one and only Son, and the destiny

peuple, Son Fils unique, et le destin de toute l'humanité. It also teaches the way of salvation
and the life of faith. Il enseigne également la voie du salut et la vie
de foi. Whatever is not
found in the Bible nor can be proved by it is not to be required as an article
of belief or as necessary to salvation. Quelle que soit ne se retrouve
pas dans la Bible ne peut être prouvé par celui-ci ne doit pas être exigé comme
un article de foi ou comme nécessaire au salut.
V. Authority of
the Old Testament V. Autorité de l'Ancien Testament
The Old Testament is not contrary to
the New. L'Ancien Testament n'est pas contraire à la Nouvelle.
Both Testaments bear witness to God's
salvation in Christ; both speak of God's will for His people. Les deux
Testaments rendre témoignage à Dieu le salut dans le Christ, les deux parlent de
la volonté de Dieu pour Son peuple. The ancient laws for ceremonies and
rites, and the civil precepts for the nation Israel are not necessarily binding
on Christians today. Les anciennes lois pour les cérémonies et les rites,

The New Testament fulfills and
interprets the Old Testament. Le Nouveau Testament réalise et interprète

God in Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. C'est le record de la révélation
